CAIRO (Dow Jones)--Egypt on Thursday raised the casualty toll to eight dead and nearly 900 injured in two days of fighting between supporters and opponents of President Hosni Mubarak in central Cairo's Tahrir Square.

In a statement broadcast on state television a day after violence erupted, Health Minister Ahmed Samih Farid confirmed the number of casualties had increased, but he did not say how many of the casualties were members of the opposition, who have been camped out in central Cairo for tens days demanding Mubarak resign.

Clashes erupted Wednesday when Mubarak supporters showed up at the square with rocks and sticks to confront the anti-government demonstrators. The fighting persisted into Thursday afternoon with Molotov cocktails and gunfire.
