Will Denmark seize control of World Cup Qualification Group F?

It has been an emotional summer for Danish football for a whole host of reasons.

The big story was supposed to be that major tournament matches were being played in Denmark for the very first time as they part-hosted Euro 2020.

But, in their big opening game against Nordic rivals Finland, the game was stopped in the 42nd minute when talisman Christian Eriksen collapsed to the ground.

It latter transpired he’d suffered a cardiac arrest and it felt as though the whole world came to a standstill.

The game later resumed but the Danish players’ minds were clearly elsewhere as Finland snatched a 1-0 win.

Kasper Hjulmand’s side then lost to Belgium but, inspired by the stricken midfielder, rallied to hammer Russia 4-1 in their final group game.

This saw them sneak through to the round of 16 where they demolished Wales 4-0 before edging out Czech Republic 2-1 in the quarters.

So, they were through to a first major semi-final since winning Euro ’92 but, despite taking the lead through Mikkel Damsgaard’s free-kick, were beaten 2-1 by England.

Nevertheless, given the circumstances, this was seen as a fantastic run but now they need to focus on World Cup Qualification.

Well, Denmark couldn’t have made a better start in March, winning all three matches, beating Israel 2-0, Moldova 8-0 and Austria 4-0.

Particularly in the latter in Vienna, they looked imperious so, if they amass nine more points this month, they could pretty much book the flights to Qatar.

Will they make it four wins out of four here?

Scotland meanwhile ended their 23-year exile from major tournaments this summer.

The Tartan Army did enjoy a goalless draw at Wembley but loses to Czech Republic and Croatia saw them bow out in the group phase.

Now, Steve Clarke’s side need to build on that and qualify for more tournaments.

Their start to Qatar 2022 qualifying didn’t really go to plan, drawing their first two matches at home to Austria and in Israel.

The Dark Blues did then get their first victory on matchday three, easily beating Faroe Islands 4-0 at Hampden, but that was very much expected.

This week, Scotland visit the top two seeds, Denmark here and then Austria next Tuesday, in, what will be, a campaign defining six days.

Can Clarke’s side cause an upset in Copenhagen?

Prediction: Denmark 2-0 Scotland

Denmark have only lost two of their last 14 qualification matches at Parken with only Montenegro and Portugal leaving victorious since June 2013.

Scotland and Denmark last met in competitive matches in Euro ’76 qualifying with the Dark Blues winning both, 1-0 away and 3-1 at Hampden.
