Series History

This is the first time these teams have played each other within the last six years. This year's final cutdown day was already going to be different. Typically, the NFL's deadline for teams to announce their 53-man rosters took place on the Saturday before the first week of the regular season. By the time most NFL fans had finished their first cup of coffee, teams would make their initial cuts before releasing their first 53-man roster sometime in the mid-afternoon.

Things are different in 2021. With the advent of the 17-game season, the NFL's final cutdown day was moved to a weekday. Instead of Saturday morning mayhem, NFL fans experienced their version of Super Tuesday, a term usually reserved for election Tuesdays. Several teams made moves that made national headlines, while other teams managed to mostly stay out of the limelight. No team, however, was able to avoid making at least one or two tough decisions. Players who did not make their team's roster will now look to either find a spot on another roster or find a home on a practice squad.

Now that the 4 p.m. deadline has passed, let's take a look at each team's most notable roster cut. We've also included several trades that went down throughout the course of the day.

The Gamecocks participated in the alternate FCS spring schedule, after playing just four games last fall due to the coronavirus pandemic. Jacksonville State was 3-1 last fall, and finished the spring with a 7-2 mark. UAB closed out 2020 with a 6-3 record, including 3-1 in the Conference-USA West Division. The Blazers defeated Marshall 22-13 in the C-USA Championship Game, their second conference title in the past three years.

Kickoff from the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery, Ala., is set for 7:30 p.m. ET. This will be the sixth meeting between the schools, with UAB holding a 3-2 edge in the series. The Blazers are 14.5-point favorites in the latest UAB vs. Jacksonville State odds from Caesars Sportsbook, while the over-under for total points scored is set at 47.5. Why UAB can cover

The Blazers return 11 seniors who will utilize their extra year of eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Of those, seven are All-Conference USA performers, and include All-American safety/linebacker Kristopher Moll. Moll led the Blazers in tackles in 2020 with 59, including 40 solo. He also registered two sacks for 14 yards and broke up two passes. His best game was an 11-tackle performance at Miami on Sept. 10, which included seven solo stops.

Redshirt junior Tyler Johnston III returns after leading UAB to two Conference-USA titles as the starting quarterback. In five games last season, Johnston completed 57 of 97 passes (58.8 percent) for 843 yards and seven touchdowns. He was intercepted just once and had a rating of 153. In the conference title game win, he completed 12 of 22 passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns. Johnston is 13-5 as UAB's starting quarterback.

Why Jacksonville State can cover

Despite that, the Blazers are not a lock to cover the UAB vs. Jacksonville State spread. That's because the Gamecocks are also coming off a conference championship, winning the Ohio Valley Conference with a 6-1 mark this spring. It was their 24th conference crown in the school's football history. Jacksonville State advanced to the FCS spring playoffs, where they lost to fifth-ranked Delaware 20-14 on May 2. They join the Atlantic Sun Conference this season.

Redshirt senior quarterback Zerrick Cooper enters the game needing just 161 yards to pass Eli Jenkins as the Gamecocks' all-time leading passer. Jenkins threw for 7,652 yards from 2013-16. Cooper started all four games in the fall, completing 54 of 81 passes (66.7 percent) for 671 yards and a touchdown, before being sidelined with a season-ending injury against Florida International. Cooper was named to the Phil Steele FCS All-American second team as well as the All-OVC team in his third season at quarterback for the Gamecocks.
