Plotting chain surveys

Independent learners may wish to practice plotting chain or linear surveys.

The attached practice worksheet below and (here) is reproduced from a 1982 level 2 site surveying and levelling text book by H Rawlinson (to whom all acknowledgements are given). The example represents a house and garden with surrounding field.

Independent learners can use the survey bookings to plot this survey at a suitable scale on drawing paper using correct drawing symbols and graphical representations.

Graphic accuracy, in manual plotting if we say the thinnest width that can be plotted by a sharp pencil is approximately 1/5th of a mm. The bookings below are to 0.1m or the nearest 100mm. If we choose a scale of 1:500 where 1mm on our plot represents 500mm on the survey our 1/5 of a mm accuracy will be 100mm.

SketchUp 3d Warehouse

Those with access to Google SketchUp can use the 3d Model (here) to examine a representation of the survey plot.
